New blog coming to life

Oh boy, I've probably written this post hundreds of times at this point. It has been quite the process to find the right way to introduce myself and my intention for the content that will appear in this space. When I started this project earlier in the year, my goal was to share some of my know-how about graphic design and interesting insights that folks could apply to their own work.

It is important to me to always challenge myself to do the most good with the tools I have, but how to do that is not always clear at first. The thing I’ve been thinking about the most is how this blog would not be best served by me — a white, straight, cis woman — just sharing my point of view. That is not the way I approach my work and it is not valuable to building the more just and equitable design community I want to be a part of.

So with that, my goal for this intro really became how to outline the journey that we can go on together to explore and share helpful insights about graphic design from a variety of voices with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Here’s what you can expect to see:Here’s what you can expect to see:

  1. Behind-the-scenes looks at projects: I want to demystify the process of how impactful designs come together by sharing the stories behind projects I’ve worked on. Here I will feature perspectives from organizations and businesses I have partnered with and shine a light on the good work they are doing.

  2. Tips and insights on the solopreneuer life: Being out here on our own as  solopreneurs can be SCARY and there are so many things you don’t learn until you’ve made a mistake. If any insight or lesson I’ve learned on my journey as a graphic designer can be helpful for others to avoid some challenges I’ve encountered, I’m here for that! Here you will also hear from guest creatives and solopreneuers sharing their experiences and insights.

  3. How designers are challenging the status quo: There are always new things to learn and rethink in order to be a better designer and collaborator. I will share perspectives and resources from creatives and changemakers who challenge how we think about how design gets made. This will include issues like representation in photography and cultural appropriation -- important issues in the design world that need to be discussed.

Lastly, each month I will highlight and donate to people who are leading the charge for change. To kick things off, this month I am donating to the Black Lives Matters DC Legal Support Fund.

There you have it! Check back here in July for our first post! We will be taking a look at the Headley Carter Cares Foundation, a Black-led nonprofit here in Maryland that advocates for school-age children identified by their school systems as having social, emotional and behavioral challenges. We will go behind the scenes of their branding and how they are using it to move their mission forward.

Talk to you then!
